Bihar reactivates quarantine centres for migrant workers amid India COVID-19 surge

Patna: The Bihar government has started setting up quarantine centres in villages to house migrant workers returning home from other states amid the rising number of COVID-19 cases. India said on Tuesday that the cases were rising like a wave that’s moving faster than the previous one, warning that the next four weeks were going to be critical. “The next four weeks are very, very critical for us,” senior government health official Dr VK Paul told the media. Alarmed at the surging COVID-19 cases and the migrants returning home following partial lockdowns and other related restrictions, the Bihar government has initiated a variety of measures, including setting up a large number of quarantine centres as was done last year, to deal with the sudden challenge. The state government took action after reviewing the coronavirus situation in Bihar with the district magistrates, district superintendent of police and to health officials on Tuesday evening.

It is unclear how IIT Gandhinagar was able to bypass the Centre’s guidelines and vaccinate its students, a majority of whom are not even 25 years old.

IIT-D researchers develop device to diagnose dengue within an hour

It has been successfully tested on clinical blood samples Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology here have developed a handheld Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS)-based platform for early diagnosis of dengue and also gives dengue test results within one hour (rapid diagnosis). HIV detection The institute said that the handheld device has been successfully tested on the clinical blood samples collected from hundreds of individuals in collaboration with ICMR-National Institute of Malaria Research (NIMR), New Delhi, and also helps in rapid detection of HIV. Conventional tools “Early diagnosis of dengue is the key to prevent deterioration of a patient’s health. However, conventional diagnostic tools like nucleic acid detection using Reverse Transcriptase Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) is a time-taking process and it also requires expensive equipment and reagents for the diagnosis of dengue,” the institute said outlining the need for the device.
