The National Donut Day tradition has roots dating back to World War I when nearly 250 Salvation Army volunteers, known as “Donut Lassies,” traveled overseas to provide emotional and spiritual support, as well as fried confections, supplies and other services to troops on the frontlines.

The Salvation Army of Kent County will deliver 35 dozen doughnuts Friday to thank first responders for their work in the community.
June 4 is The Salvation Army’s annual Donut Day. To commemorate the occasion, The Salvation Army of Kent County will spend the morning personally delivering over 35 dozen doughnuts to the Grand Rapids and Wyoming police departments, Kent County Sheriff’s Office, Grand Rapids fire departments, and AMR and Life EMS ambulance services as a small way to thank them for their work in the community.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. The Grand Rapids community has shown the Salvation Army of Kent County unprecedented generosity and surpassed the Red Kettle campaign goal of $1.3 million.
The Salvation Army said it was met with increased need in 2020. It served double the amount of families at Christmastime and nearly 30,000 total people throughout the entire year. The first month of 2021 has shown the rise in request for services has not subsided, and the Salvation Army said donations are always needed.

KENT COUNTY, Mich. â The Salvation Army Red Kettle campaign is a Christmas tradition that has been around for more than 130 years.
This year, amid covid-19, Major Glen Caddy of Salvation Army Kent County says; We are looking to serve more than 2,200 families during Christmas time, which is twice as many as we had last year.
Those donations from the red kettle campaign will be used to support after school programs for kids, socialization and feeding programs for seniors, housing assistance for families, substance abuse programs, and emergency food pantries.
