NASA s 7 Asteroid Simulations Show the Difficulty of Stopping Impacts

NASA has led seven such simulations, and the participants only fully stopped the asteroid once. It shows how challenging it would be to stop an Earth-bound space rock, even with ample warning. An international group of space experts have been bested by a hypothetical asteroid. Again. In a planetary-defense simulation that NASA led last month, more than 200 participants from about two dozen countries learned that a fictitious space rock was set to strike Earth in six months. They put their heads together to investigate every possible way to avoid the impact. But in the end, the group determined that no existing technologies could stop the asteroid, given the limited warning time in the scenario. The rock ended up razing eastern Europe.

Here s How Many Years in Advance We d Need to Stop a Killer Asteroid Coming For Earth

Here s How Many Years in Advance We d Need to Stop a Killer Asteroid Coming For Earth MORGAN MCFALL-JOHNSEN & AYLIN WOODWARD, BUSINESS INSIDER 13 MAY 2021 Last month, experts from NASA and other space agencies around the world faced a troubling hypothetical scenario: A mysterious asteroid had just been discovered 35 million miles away, and it was heading for Earth. The space rock was expected to hit in six months.   The situation was fictional, part of a week-long exercise that simulated an incoming asteroid in order to help US and international experts practice how to respond to such a situation. The simulation taught the group a difficult lesson: If an Earth-bound asteroid were spotted with that little warning, there s nothing anyone could do to keep it from hitting the planet.

NASA readies its best asteroid punch | U S Embassy & Consulates in Italy

(State Dept./D. Thompson) It sounds like the plot of a Hollywood blockbuster, but it’s real. NASA scientists will soon launch a mission to change the course of a distant asteroid in a test of technology that could one day save planet Earth from disaster. The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) spaceship could launch as early as July. It will travel 11 million kilometers and slam into the smaller part of the Didymos binary asteroid system, knocking the moonlet slightly off its current path. The asteroid punch is planned for September 2022. Shortly before impact, a shoebox-sized satellite built by NASA partners in Italy will break away from the rocket to help scientists study the asteroid’s trajectory after the collision and determine if the mission is a success.
