Unforgiving difficulty
Sony markets Housemarque’s Returnal as the next must-own, AAA, PlayStation 5 exclusive. Although the game certainly looks like a big-budget extravaganza, the underlying gameplay is decidedly indie. Returnal is an uber-challenging roguelike in the vein of The Binding of Isaac, Dead Cells, or Hades; God of War, Ghost of Tsushima, or Marvel s Spider-Man, it is not. There’s an audience for the genre, and Returnal appeals to that fanbase with its life-death cycles and satisfying gunplay. That said, the average person may balk at the Returnal s brutal difficulty, especially when the game costs a hefty $69.99.

When the PS5 released late last year, it arrived with a couple of cross-gen releases, a very pretty remake of a 10-year-old game, and an adorable platformer tucked away in the system s memory. But once the dust settled and the newness of the console started to fade, many wondered when the first real next-gen game would arrive for the system the flagship title that would showcase what the PS5 is capable of. Not just from a technical standpoint, but in its gameplay, sound, story the whole package.
Almost five months into the new year, it s looking like we have to turn to Returnal for answers. This roguelike is the first major PS5 release of the year so there is a lot riding on its shoulders. Not only was it bound to set the standard for next-gen releases, but it had a lot to prove as a new IP amidst news of Sony s focus on blockbusters and reluctance to greenlight new projects.

Returnal.
Everything was going well. I’d cleared most of the rooms on the first floor. I’d taken very little damage, a crucial factor in
Returnal: the less damage you take, the more you can increase your maximum HP from health drops.
I’d gotten the upgrades I wanted. My melee attack was stronger. I’d gotten the juicy 25 per cent upgrade to health, perhaps the most valuable attribute to any
Returnal run. I’d gotten some decent weaponry with some good attributes.
Everything was going right. I figured, why not give the first boss a shot again? I’d already beaten the first boss, a tall, lithe alien with lasers thicker than bone. I did the math in my head: the stronger melee attack should make the first and second phases pass by relatively quickly. The extra HP should buffer me nicely for the third act, when the larger AOE attacks come up.
