The latest map from U.S. Drought Monitor shows severe drought conditions in McHenry, Lake, Kane, DuPage and Cook counties due to lack of precipitation in the area. It’s the first time severe drought has appeared in Cook County since August 2012, according to the Illinois State Climatologist Office. Unless significant rain hits our area in the next 11 days, this could become the second driest May on record in Chicago since 1871.

2nd driest May in Chicago on record: Could lake of rain mean drought conditions?

Through almost the first two weeks in May only 0.35 of an inch of rain has fallen at O’Hare International Airport, the city’s official recording site. Typically, at least 1.5 inches more than that would have fallen by now. Unless significant rain hits our area in the next few weeks, this could become the second driest May on record in Chicago since 1871.
