(The Center Square) – The Illinois State Board of Education is awaiting word on a request to waive Spring 2021 assessments across schools.
State Superintendent Carmen Ayala sent a letter asking for the waiver on assessments, noting that over a million Illinois students are still receiving instruction through remote learning. According to the ISBE, less than 200 school districts serving less than 200,000 students are currently able to offer in-person instruction.
Education unions urged the ISBE to request the waiver. In a joint letter with the Illinois Education Association, the Illinois Principals Association, the Illinois Federation of Teachers, and the Illinois Association of School Administrators, members are calling for the postponement of standardized testing this spring.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. The principal of the Thurgood Marshall Learning Center has been nominated for the award of the High School Principal of the Year by the Illinois Principals Association.
Philip Ambrose, who has served in education for 44 years and has lead the center for 15 years, was recognized by the IPA as a candidate for the award coming from the state s Blackhawk region.
The High School Principal of the Year award recognizes principals who have demonstrated a positive impact on their students and learning community. Gurnee, IL - The Illinois Principals Association (IPA) has selected Dr. Lisa West of Woodland District 50 as the Lake Region Elementary School Principal of the Year!
Dr. West has been part of the Woodland community for nine years. She is currently in her first year as the principal at Woodland Intermediate, and prior to that she has served as the principal at Elementary East, and three years as an assistant principal at Intermediate.
Upon receiving the news, Dr. West said, Being nominated and selected as IPA s 2020 Lake County Elementary Principal of the Year is an honor I share with all of those dedicated educators who make a difference in the lives of students each and every day.
