Carlisle s Charles Deans aims to raise £50,000 for Cumbrian charities

A WIGTON man who has taken on an epic fund-raising challenge has seen his efforts backed by a local solicitors. Charles Deans is attempting to travel the distance from Land s End to John O Groats in his wheelchair on Cumbrian Roads. The Wigton man was paralysed 16 years ago, but recently climbed Dodd Fell and Latrigg with his family. He is now attempting to travel 874 miles - the distance between Britain s most northern and southern points - on local roads. Part of the fund-raising campaign is a competition for primary school children across Cumbria to design a t-shirt for Mr Deans to wear on the final leg of his journey.

A NORTH Cumbrian dad whose fight-back from life-changing disability has become an inspiration to others has set himself a new challenge ­ and he wants local schoolchildren to help him. Former builder Charles Deans, 46, from Wigton, has also battled back to health after a back problem left him paralysed and in a wheelchair. The father-of-two also overcome a dependency on pain-killing opiate medication which medics warned could have killed him. Ever since he had that warning, in May of 2018, Charles has dedicated himself to becoming as strong and as fit as he possibly can. Gradually, over several months, he taught himself to focus not on his pain, but on exercise.

T-shirt competition launch to support Charles Deans epic wheelchair challenge

Wragg Mark-Bell is getting behind local man Charles Deans’ attempt to travel the distance from Land’s End to John O’Groats in his wheelchair to raise money for two local charities. Part of that fundraising campaign will also include a competition for all primary school children in Cumbria to design a T-shirt for Mr Deans to wear on the final leg of his journey, which is set to be completed on local roads in the coming weeks.

Tributes paid to popular Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw volunteer

Tributes have been paid to a dedicated charity volunteer who “made a huge difference” to the lives of hospice patients and their families. Howard Dobie, 69, was a volunteer at Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw Children’s Hospice and had dedicated a “tremendous amount of hours.” Mr Dobie supported the retail and housekeeping teams, originally helping in the charity’s furniture shop in Carlisle before moving to laundry. He passed away on January 14 at the Cumberland Infirmary. A tribute has been released on behalf of the two hospices that Mr Dobie had given so many hours of his time to. Patricia Livsey, chief executive at Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw, said: “The thoughts of everybody at Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw are with Howard’s family at this time.
