It’s hard to overstate how far we have come in the fight against COVID in just a few short months.
Since early January, the number of new infections has fallen by more than 85%. Hospitalizations have followed suit, giving overwhelmed doctors and nurses some breathing room. Rather than having more than 100 people dying from the disease in a week, the death toll is down to a couple per day.
According to a report from KUTV, the Utah Public Health Association is encouraging Utahns to continue wearing masks in public, even after the mask mandate ends on Saturday.
The association said until every eligible person is vaccinated, the three best steps to take in order to combat COVID-19 are masking, hand washing and social distancing. It said the better Utahns are at wearing masks and following other COVID-19 guidelines now, “the more confidently we can return to normalcy sooner than later.”
UPHA applauded Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall for extending the city’s mask mandate and also said it supports Governor Spencer Cox’s decision to maintain mask mandates in state facilities.
Salt Lake City reissues mask order this time with more detail about public gatherings
Mayor Erin Mendenhall’s office also argues the order doesn’t violate state’s COVID-19 “endgame” law.

The mayor and her staff rewrote her April 7 emergency declaration to create a citywide mask order.

A second proclamation, issued Wednesday night, was written “to be more specific about what is considered a ‘public setting’” than Mendenhall’s Wednesday afternoon declaration was, according to a statement Thursday from the mayor’s office.

SALT LAKE CITY Steven Rivera has lived near the Utah State Fairpark in Salt Lake City for over a decade. He used to let his children walk to school and take his dog for walks along the Jordan River.
But not anymore. We ve been there for 12 years and it s just getting worse, he said Tuesday, fighting back tears. People will camp out (on the streets nearby) and they will do drugs out there, they ll leave their needles out there, just all kinds of garbage.
