A Second Carroll County Trail Rehabilitation Project Is Presented To Supervisors

After unanimously approving a $100,000 match commitment with the City of Carroll to support a Carroll County Conservation application for rehabilitation on a portion of the Sauk Rail Trail, the Board of Supervisors were presented with the opportunity to assist in resurfacing of another county trail. Earlier this week, Katie Mason, who is the Executive Director for Main Street Coon Rapids, met with supervisors to discuss their plan for the Riverside Trail. Like Carroll County Conservation, they will be applying for a portion of a total of $5 million in grants being offered by the Iowa Transportation Commission strictly for repairs and rehabilitation of existing trail systems. Mason says the timing is right to not only aid with much-needed repairs, but it will also set the stage for future expansion.

Carroll Council Approves Buy-In For $1 Million Sauk Rail Trail Improvements Grant

Carroll County Conservation has also stressed the importance of taking advantage of grant opportunities for rehabilitation as trail fees alone are not able to keep up with those costs. The Conservation Board has proposed two phases for the project, from Swan Lake to the Houlihan Access and from there as far as the dollars allocated will take them towards Maple River. Funding for the City of Carroll $100,000 match will come from the trail allocations already budgeted, which typically come from Local Option Sales Tax (L.O.S.T.) proceeds. If a grant award is received, it is anticipated the match will need to be paid in 2022 or 2023.

Volunteers hope to raise as much as $1.75 million towards a new Wadena library. 6:40 am, May 3, 2021 × File photo Who s that knocking on your door? It may be a friendly volunteer from the Wadena Library fundraising committee looking to secure funding for the planned renovation of the First National Bank building into Wadena s new library. Volunteers are working hard through the month of May to secure funding for this project, which, according to committee member Luther Nervig, is a critical part of the community. Sure, he s heard from some wondering if the library is really that important. His response is that while not everyone goes to the library, the volume of traffic to the current library makes it clear that not only is the current library well used, but a larger one is needed.
