2020 was a difficult year for U.S. red meat exports to Colombia, where COVID-19 took a major toll on meat demand and consumer spending. With demand expected to rebound this year, the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) is looking to expand the retail presence of U.S. pork and beef in Colombia.
USMEF Colombia representative Don Mason explains that these efforts include a new education and training initiative for Colombian butcher shop owners and their employees, funded through the USDA Agricultural Trade Promotion Program, the National Pork Board and the Beef Checkoff Program.

Last year was a record-setting year for U.S. pork exports. Sales abroad in 2020 were up 11% by volume and value increased 11% compared to 2019, according to recent data released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and compiled by the U.S. Meat Export Federation. From January to December, 6.56 billion pounds of U.S. pork and pork variety meat, valued at $7.7 billion, were exported globally. Pork exports accounted for 29.3% of total U.S. pork production.

Dennis Liljedahl succeeds Mike Paustian as president of IPPA, a change in leadership which came during the organization’s yearly annual meeting on January 26th. Paustian now holds the past president position on the IPPA Board of Directors. Both will serve one-year terms in their respective roles. In a Tuesday morning interview with the Iowa Agribusiness Radio Network, Liljedahl said he’s excited to help lead the association in 2021.
“It’s an honor to represent IPPA this coming year,” Liljedahl said. “We’re really looking forward to getting back to somewhat of a normal schedule. Hopefully, we don’t have as many disruptions as we did this past year. Of course, our ultimate goal is always profitable producers.”

Wednesday Feb 10th, 2021 Alabama’s largest farm organization welcomes Senator Tommy Tuberville’s appointment to the Senate Ag Committee.
Alabama Farmers Federation was among the first groups to endorse the former Auburn University football coach’s bid for U.S. Senate.
Federation President Jimmy Parnell praised Tuberville for putting in the work to learn about the issues important to farmers and seeking to be a voice for Alabama agriculture in Congress.
