Firefighters found the child’s body on the third floor of the Astor Street residence, authorities said. “(His) father escaped the home through the front door and attempted to re-enter via the roof” from the house next door, Newark Public Safety Director Brian A. O’Hara said Thursday. “He was removed from the roof by Newark firefighters via ground ladder.”

O’Hara has confirmed the body of a 7-year-old boy was located by firefighters on the third floor during an early morning Newark fire. The fire started around 4:50 a.m. at the three-story residence at 65 Astor St. According to officials, the child’s father escaped the home through the front door and attempted to re-enter via the roof of 67 Astor St. He was removed from the roof by firefighters via ground ladder.
