El Paso sees significant increase in syphilis infections, STD testing urged
EL PASO, Texas The El Paso Department of Public Health is reporting a significant increase in syphilis cases, prompting calls for residents to get tested for sexually transmitted diseases.
Officials noted a nearly 30% increase in STDs in recent times - with the sharpest increase involving syphilis infections, which have nearly quadrupled. STDs can have serious health consequences. People with these infections do not always experience disease symptoms, but, if left untreated, some can increase the risk of HIV infection, or can cause chronic pelvic pain, pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, severe pregnancy, newborn complication and even infant death, said a health department statement.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) The El Paso Department of Public Health announced one coronavirus-related death and 48 new cases Tuesday.
That marks the fewest new cases reported in El Paso County since Sept. 9.
El Paso s pandemic death toll now stands at 2,541. There are 49 additional suspected Covid-19 deaths currently being investigated by the health department.
El Paso health department data shows that 43.3% of El Pasoans over the age of 16 are now fully vaccinated, with 64.4% having received at least one.
The number of known active cases now stands at 2,230.
There are 147 (+2) Covid-19 patients in El Paso hospitals, with 45 (-1) of those patients in intensive care units.
Vaccinating younger adults, however, is the biggest goal for city officials moving forward. All those young adults are probably working or probably still have some doubts about getting vaccinated, said Dr. Hector Ocaranza, the city-county health authority for the El Paso Department of Public Health.
The city has been taking vaccinations to residents through pop-up vaccination clinics across the city during events such as the El Paso Artists and Farmers Market or at the unveiling of a new community center.
Incentives might be offered for vaccinations
Incentivizing people to get vaccinated, D Agostino said, also is an option being considered.
The race to vaccinate El Pasoans is taking on increased urgency as new COVID-19 strains are reported in the area. So far, two variants, the California and United Kingdom variants, have been identified in 11 people in El Paso, according to Angela Mora, the city s public health director.
