Texas Lawmaker Urges Homeland Security to End Biden’s ‘Catch and Release’ Policy
Rep. Pat Fallon (R-Texas) on Tuesday called on Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas to abolish the Biden administration’s “catch and release” immigration policy, saying that it threatens local communities.
The Republican lawmaker sent Mayorkas a letter after the Department of Homeland Security ordered the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department to release illegal immigrants onto the streets of his district under the immigration policy.
“I cannot sit idly by while people in the Department of Homeland Security jeopardize the safety of my constituents. I urge Secretary Mayorkas to immediately revise the policies of catch and release that are threatening our communities,” Fallon said in the letter.
US to Help Train Guatemalan Border Task Force, Increase Aid to Northern Triangle
Vice President Kamala Harris in talks with Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei Monday proposed that the United States helps train members of a Guatemalan task force in charge of protecting the country’s border.
In a virtual meeting, Harris offered to send 16 Department of Homeland Security employees to assist in the effort, amid a recent spike in unaccompanied minors arriving at the southern border many of them Guatemalan.
The vice president also said that the United States will increase aid to the region and will assist Guatemala with the construction of shelters for returned migrants.

Unaccompanied Minors to be Temporarily Housed at Long Beach Convention Center
Up to 1,000 unaccompanied minors who illegally crossed into the United States will soon be housed at California’s Long Beach Convention Center, the city council ruled in a unanimous vote.
Amid the ongoing crisis at the southern border, unaccompanied minors who are soon to be reunified with family members or sponsors will be allowed to seek shelter at the facility, in a move that will be fully funded by the federal government.
The Long Beach Convention Center will provide food, schooling, and medical and mental health care for as many as 1,000 unaccompanied minors at a time for up to three months, CBS Los Angeles reported.
