A half-century ago, I was the editor of a small daily newspaper in Northern California and one of my reporters dug up a terrific story.
He learned that that the countyâs Board of Supervisors had privately compelled the countyâs sheriff to receive alcoholism treatment by threatening to take away some of his administrative powers. The sheriffâs excessive drinking habits were well known to courthouse insiders and he had crashed at least one county vehicle while driving drunk, although it had been covered up.
We published the story on the front page and it touched off a public firestorm. However, the popular ire was not directed at the errant sheriff, but rather at the newspaper and me for, it was said, besmirching the character of a very popular local figure.

Golf great Tiger Woods wasn t sure where he was when a sheriff s deputy interviewed him after his one-car crash in February, according to a 22-page report obtained by USA Today.
Woods was in Los Angeles for The Genesis Invitational and promotional appearances but told the deputy that he thought he was in Florida, where he makes his permanent residence.
The report details the conversation between deputy Kyle Sullivan and Woods, which took place at the hospital as Woods was receiving stitches for an injury to his face.

Tiger Woods was driving at almost twice the speed limit when he crashed his car in California, authorities in Los Angeles have said.
The 45-year-old was travelling at between 84 and 87 mph on a downhill stretch of road which had a speed limit of 45mph.
The stretch of road is known for crashes and drivers hitting speeds so high that there is an emergency exit for runaway vehicles just beyond where Woods crashed.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva blamed the February 23 crash solely on excessive speed and Woods’ loss of control behind the wheel.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police raiding the Grace Life Church just outside Edmonton Alberta today and installing fencing around it.
In fact two layers of fencing with tarp covering it around the church and additional fencing in the parking lot and the driveway. Private security guards placed on 24-hour duty at the church.
The actions under a health order from the Alberta Health Service.
The move against a church whose pastor was jailed for continuing to hold services in spite of coronavirus restrictions.
The church has continued to hold services in spite of the coronavirus lockdown.

Officials say Woods was driving roughly 40 miles over the speed limit, golfer may have hit gas instead of brake.

Officials say Tiger Woods was driving nearly 40 miles per hour over the speed limit in February near Los Angeles before he veered off the road, hit a tree and flipped over. Estimated speeds at the first area of impact were 84-87 miles per hour, Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said. And the estimated speed before the vehicle struck the tree was 75 miles per hour.
The posted speed limit for the road is 45 miles per hour. However, officials say they won t give Woods a citation.
