Convicted Athens felon sent to federal prison for gun possession

An Athens man was given a hefty federal prison term Wednesday after authorities said he was caught with a firearm.
Curioki Hyche was sentenced to five years and three months by U.S. District Court Judge C. Ashley Royal during a hearing in U.S. District Court in Athens.
Hyche, 32, was a felon with an aggravated assault conviction, federal authorities said.
There is no parole in the federal system.
Hyche was arrested Aug. 13, 2019, after a confidential informant told Athens-Clarke police that Hyche was in possession of a firearm. Federal authorities said Hyche was at the Triangle Plaza area of Nellie B Avenue when a surveillance camera captured images of him hiding a firearm in some bushes.
The Athens-Clarke County Police Department is investigating the shooting of two 18-year-olds that occurred in the 100 block of Highland Park Drive on Monday, according to an ACCPD press release.
Man hides drugs in pants
Police confiscated an array of drugs from underneath a manâs penis after stopping him and two others in a stolen car, according to an ACCPD report.Â
When police searched the vehicle, they found unlabeled pills, a spoon and syringe, bags of cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana and a handgun. After searching the car, police asked the man if he had any more contraband on him, and the man admitted he had heroin and marijuana under his penis.Â
Police also found counterfeit money in another manâs pocket. Police noticed the money had a strange texture and did not have a security strip. They also confiscated a large stack of lottery tickets in the vehicle, according to the report.
Taeden Johnson, a 12-year-old Athenian, lost his mother, sister and grandmother in a house fire Wednesday at Hallmark Manufactured Housing on Spring Valley Road. Now, his former mentor, Zac Hendrix, has set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for Johnson s future.
Johnson s mother, Penyada Fields, 35, his grandmother, Penny Fields, 54, and his sister, Mariah Fields, 9, died in the fire, according to the Athens Banner-Herald. Johnson was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to an Athens-Clarke County Police Department report.
Hendrixâs GoFundMe for Johnson has a $500,000 goal and has raised over $77,000 as of press time. The page also asks for those who are able to donate clothes for Johnson and his half-sister, who was not home at the time of the fire.
