SAULT STE. MARIE Lake Superior State University junior business administration major and U.S. Coast Guard reservist Madelyn Swanson has received the Amy Ignatowski Memorial Award from Lake State.
The $500 award is given annually to a Lake State student who is an active Coast Guard member or reservist or the dependent of one stationed at the Sault sector.
“I am very honored to receive this award,” said Swanson. “Like Amy Ignatowski, I was drawn to the Coast Guard’s life-saving mission. It is an honor to receive an award that is dedicated to someone who showed hard work and dedication to school and to serving their country.”

Laker Shanty Day
From 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. at Lake Superior State University’s Cisler Center, located at 650 W. Easterday Ave. in the Sault, Lake State is having its first Laker Shanty Day. This event is free and open to the public. The public will have the chance to enjoy tailgate-type food, watch Laker hockey on a movie screen and relax with your choice of beer and wine with a cash bar. Tickets are $20 at the door. This event follows the Four Pillars of Laker Safety.
Winter hiking event
For those looking to get outside and getting intimate with nature this weekend, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, the North Country Trail, Hiawatha Shore-To-Shore Chapter is hosting a hiking event where residents will have the chance to take in the views of the Upper Falls at Tahquamenon Falls State Park.
The Department of Natural Unicorns at Lake Superior State University urges residents to not quest unicorns on Feb. 14 this year as a celebration of its 50th anniversary.
