One Upper Peninsula university’s practice of “unicorn hunting” is alive and well as the tradition marks its 50 anniversary just don’t attempt to bag the mythical beast on Valentine’s Day. That’s the message from Lake Superior State University, which is breathing new life into a tongue-in-cheek tradition first dreamed up by the late W.T. Rabe, LSSU’s notoriously clever former director of public relations. Unicorn hunting, or “questing,” as it is properly known, has been part of university lore since 1971, when the newly hired Rabe founded a group called the Unicorn Hunters one of several quirky PR stunts meant to help make a name for LSSU, which had just established itself as an independent school after being part of what is now Michigan Technological University.

The project recently received $250,000 from the United States Forest Service as part of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, a program that protects Great Lakes drinking water and habitat. Stormwater carries things like trash and bacteria from the city, through the drainage systems and into the river, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.  Landscaping, also known as green infrastructure in this context, reduces or treats stormwater runoff on its way to a river or lake.

Feb 5, 2021 ALBION, Mich. Albion College announces students who were named to the dean’s list or who were named new Albion College Fellows at the end of the fall 2020 semester. Dean’s list honors recognize students with a minimum 3.5 grade-point average in four graded courses, while Albion College Fellow is an honor reserved for students who maintain a minimum 3.7 GPA over three consecutive semesters. Eddie Cardew, a first-year student, was named to the dean’s list for the fall 2020 semester. Cardew is a resident of Sagola and is a graduate of Kingsford High School. Mackenzie Rundell, a first-year student, was named to the dean’s list. She is a member of the Prentiss M. Brown Honors Program. Rundell is a resident of Kingsford and is a graduate of Kingsford High School.

Lone Star forward Johnson makes NCAA DI commitment

February 4, 2021 The Lone Star Brahmas of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) are pleased to announce that forward Luke Johnson has committed to play NCAA Division I hockey at Lake Superior State University. So far during the 2020-21 season, Johnson, 19, has recorded 21 points (12 goals, 9 assists) in 25 games played, which also includes a league-leading five game-winning goals. The 5’11/165 lbs. native of St. Cloud, MN, is 3 rd in team scoring and ranks in the Top 20 in NAHL scoring. “I’m honored to have received a scholarship to play Division 1 college hockey at Lake Superior State University,” said Johnson, regarding his commitment. “I would like to thank my family, parents, brother and adviser, as well as teammates and coaches.
