Video evidence, DNA analysis and a partial confession will be critical to proving a farm laborer stabbed a University of Iowa student to death while she was out for a run in 2018, a prosecutor told jurors Wednesday.
Poweshiek County Attorney Bart Klaver said in his opening statement that he will ask them to find Cristhian Bahena Rivera guilty of first-degree murder in the death of 20-year-old Mollie Tibbetts.

The Iowa Department of Corrections has hired a new security operations director, in the wake of the killings of two prison staffers, allegedly by two inmates. Multiple investigations are underway into the incident at the Anamosa State Penitentiary on March 23 and state officials have said a slate of policy and operational changes may follow.
Man accused of killing Iowa trooper released from hospital, booked into jail

GRUNDY CENTER, Iowa (KTIV) - A man accused of shooting and killing an Iowa State Patrol trooper has been released from the hospital and booked into jail.
The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation says on April 21 Michael Lang of Grundy Center was released by the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and transported to the Grundy County Sheriff s Office where he is being held on a $3,000,000 cash bond.
The 41-year-old Lang is charged in the April 9 shooting death of ISP Sgt. Jim Smith. He is charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder and assault on a peace officer.
LeCLAIRE, Iowa (KTIV) - A woman in eastern Iowa has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder after an infant in her care suffered multiple severe injuries resulting in her death.
According to the LeClaire, Iowa Police Department, officers were dispatched to an in-home daycare in LeClaire on Feb. 5, 2020, for an infant in distress.
Upon arrival, police say first responders found a 5-month-old female who appeared to be unresponsive with labored breathing.
The 5-month-old was transported to a local hospital, where her condition worsened. She was then airlifted to an Iowa City hospital, where doctors discovered the child had a fractured skull, as well as a brain bleed.
