The good news is that the number of workers in the Irish banking sector who think they’re employed by ethical organisations has improved – albeit from a low base – in the past few years.
An industry survey published by the fledgling Irish Banking Culture Board on Monday showed that two-thirds of people working in the industry believe there is now no conflict between their bank’s stated values and how it actually does business – up from 56 per cent in 2018.

The Irish public has lower trust in its banking system than consumers globally have of financial firms, despite bank workers in the State having seen improvements in the culture of their organisations in recent years, according to the findings of two surveys.
The Irish Banking Culture Board (IBCB) said on Monday that the Irish banking sector received a net score of minus 28 in a public survey carried out earlier this year by consultancy firm Edelman.
This compares to a global average of plus 16 for banks globally under Edelmanâs so-called trust barometer.
The survey found Irish consumers had a more positive view of their own bank than the wider industry.

TWO NEW SURVEYS by the Irish Banking Culture Board (IBCB) suggest that while public trust in the Irish banking sector remains low, bank staff members believe industry cultures are improving.
The IBCB is an industry initiative funded by the five main retail banks Bank of Ireland, AIB, Permanent TSB, Ulster Bank and KBC Bank which aims to improve banking culture in Ireland.
Of over 1,000 members of the public surveyed as part of the IBCB’s éist Public Trust in Banking survey, a plurality of respondents (46%) said they had low levels of trust in the banking sector.
