02 February 2021 Share The European Parliament Committee on Industry, Research and Energy has approved a draft resolution on the safety of the Ostrovets nuclear power plant in Belarus. Committee members voted 66 in favour and two against the resolution, with seven abstentions. The document, which was initiated by Lithuania, will be discussed at the plenary session of the European Parliament next week. The draft resolution says the plant is 50km from Vilnius, in Lithuania, and close to other EU countries, including Estonia, Latvia and Poland. Belarus adherence to international safety standards in nuclear power plant construction stressed Last week the European Parliament passed a resolution on the Belarusian nuclear power plant. Among other things the resolution calls for complete observance of international safety standards. The Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry (Gosatomnadzor) has commented on some matters relating to nuclear and radiation safety regulations. First of all, Gosatomnadzor stressed that in the course of implementing its first nuclear energy program Belarus strictly follows safety standards of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and fundamental safety principles.
