A new report published by the Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders (an FIDH-OMCT partnership) documents and analyses the intensification of these practices over the past six years, in the context of the upheaval caused by the Trump administration in the United States and the expected opening of an investigation by the International Criminal Court.

The Observatory has been informed about the killing of
Ah Khu, director of the civil society group Women for Justice [1], as well as the arbitrary detention of
Thin Thin Aung and
Myo Aye. Thin Thin Aung is the co-founder of Women for Justice, leading member of Women’s League of Burma [2], and co-founder of the independent Mizzima News outlet [3]. Myo Aye is a labour rights activist and director of the Solidarity Trade Union of Myanmar (STUM).

The Observatory has been informed about the arbitrary detention of
Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu, a long-standing human rights defender, former president of the Association for Human Rights and Solidarity for the Oppressed (MAZLUMDER)[1], doctor and columnist. Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu served as a Member of Parliament from 2018 until March 2021, when his seat was revoked.
On April 2, 2021, Mr. Gergerlioğlu was detained to serve the two and a half years prison sentence that he received for allegedly making “terrorist propaganda” through a social media post in 2016 in which he advocated for peace by commenting a news story that reported a call by the PKK[2]

The Observatory has been informed about the arbitrary detention, subsequent release on bail, and ongoing judicial harassment of
Laishram Herojit Singh, aka Shintha, a human rights defender working on the promotion of the right to health and the Secretary General of the Coalition Against Drug and Alcohol (CADA)[1], in Thoubal District, Manipur State.
On April 7, 2021, at 2pm, a group of around 18 policemen from the Thoubal Police Station arbitrarily arrested Shintha at his home in Thoubal, Thoubal District, without producing a warrant and in the presence of his parents and neighbour. Shintha was subsequently taken to the Thoubal Police Station, where he was hit in the face by the police inspector, after he refused to sign the arr
