ForMin Aurescu: Solving prolonged conflicts - a priority for Romania

Sursa foto: b1.ro Minister of Foreign Affairs Bogdan Aurescu on Friday participated in the 131st meeting of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe (CoE), organised as a videoconference, on which occasion he stressed that solving prolonged conflicts is a priority for Romania. According to a MAE (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) press release, the discussions between the Foreign Ministers focus on the topical files at the level of the Council of Europe, in seeking solutions to the main challenges of the international context that fall under the competence of the Strasbourg-based body. Minister Bogdan Aurescu reiterated in his speech the active commitment of Romania in streamlining multilateralism and strengthening strategic resilience based on democratic values, as well as on the international law. Moreover, he underscored the need of building a common European legal space for a sustainable future, based on the rule of law principles.

Photograph: Damien Eagers.   Long-awaited inquests into the deaths of 48 young people in the 1981 Stardust disaster can now proceed following the resolution of a funding row between the Department of Justice and the victims’ families. Minister for Justice Heather Humphreys on Wednesday signed regulations into law which will enable all the bereaved families to access legal aid, regardless of their income. This will allow their legal team to start instructing counsel.

Brexit: NI Protocol incompatible with EU law

BBC News By John Campbell Published The Northern Ireland Protocol is incompatible with EU law, the High Court in Belfast has been told. The claim was made by a barrister for unionist leaders who are challenging the legality of the protocol. John Larkin QC cited EU law on democratic accountability and the treatment of former member states. The judicial review proceedings are being opposed by the government. The protocol is the part of the Brexit deal. It creates a trade border between Northern Ireland and Great Britain and means EU rules governing trade in goods still apply in Northern Ireland.
