Union welcomes announcement of no compulsory redundancies at Airbus Broughton

UNITE Wales has today welcomed the announcement by Airbus that there will be no compulsory redundancies across their UK operations, including at Broughton in North Wales. The news will come as a relief to the thousands of Unite members at Broughton, who recently overwhelmingly agreed to an innovative shorter working week in order to save jobs. Peter Hughes, Unite Wales Regional Secretary said: For our members at Airbus Broughton this is great news following a turbulent year that has seen the plant rocked by the effects of COVID-19. The Welsh aerospace sector has been under immense pressure due to the decline in aircraft orders resulting from the pandemic.

Airbus workers vote for shorter working week to save Broughton jobs

WORKERS have voted overwhelmingly for a shorter working week in a bid to save jobs at the Airbus plant in Broughton. Last month, Unite asked members of the union employed at the Airbus plant in Broughton to vote the plan to move to a shorter working week. The plan, which has been negotiated between Unite and Airbus, will see a reduction in the working week of between five and ten per cent for a short period of time to remove the possibility of compulsory redundancies. It also provides a roadmap to a resumption of full-time working once the coronavirus crisis, which has hit the aviation industry hard, begins to ease.

MP urges union members to vote for deal to save Airbus jobs

ALYN and Deeside MP Mark Tami has urged union members to vote for a deal which could save jobs at at Airbus in Broughton. The Leader reported earlier this week how Unite members working at the plant were set to be balloted on a plan to move to a shorter working week. Negotiated between Unite and Airbus, the plan will see a reduction in the working week of five to ten per cent for a short period of time. If agreed, it will remove the possibility of compulsory redundancies and provide a roadmap to a resumption of full time working and a way out of the COVID-19 crisis.
