UK research team reduces embodied carbon in concrete

A pilot scheme part-funded by the Ministry of Justice has managed to cut the embodied carbon emissions in precast structural concrete by 40%. The Decarbonising Precast Concrete (DPC) project has been backed by the UK’s Sustainable Innovation Fund and brought together design-for-manufacture expert Akerlof, materials manufacturer Forterra and façade construction specialist PCE, along with 30 other expert contributors. The project involved examining every decision in the traditional method of building with precast materials through the lens of carbon and developing a new, whole-process approach. The DPC team reduced the emissions from the baseline level (as measured by the ICE database) by conducting an operational activity mapping exercise to create detailed measurements of all partners’ activities.

Trainee surgeons set to hone skills with augmented reality

23rd July 2021 12:02 am 22nd July 2021 2:30 pm Augmented reality software is set to help train surgeons on hyper-real 3D-printed models of human organs. Image: Organlike The software will guide trainee surgeons as they perform simulated surgery on lifelike models and will be used in the UK and less developed areas of the world. Project partners are working with the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS) to deliver the immersive technology, which will remove barriers to training by allowing surgeons to practice lifesaving skills at home. The consortium includes industry-lead Organlike, which has produced the models of organs, along with NHS Highland, The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Vivolution, KWWK Ltd, 4c Engineering and Aseptium.
