Uncle Ben’s is back on shelves with a new name for its rice products and packaging after pledging to change its branding that’s been associated with racial stereotypes.
Ben’s Original products are now at retailers nationwide, Mars Food said Wednesday. The new packaging features the company’s name in its signature navy blue lettering with its orange background. Ben s Original is not just a name and packaging change – we believe everyone deserves to feel welcome, heard and have access to nutritious food, Rafael Narvaez, Global Chief Marketing Officer and R&D Officer at Mars Food, said in a statement, adding: That s why we ve committed to taking actions based on insights from thousands of consumers, as well as our own Associates, that are designed to enhance inclusion and equity in service of our new brand purpose to create meals, experiences and opportunities that offer everyone a seat at the table.
The Proposal That Led To Their Big Day
“The proposal couldn’t have turned out any better. I knew I was taking her to Cabo for an end of year trip… but I had been in contact with a planner there for about a month in advance,” Dalen says. “I was able to secure a portion of the beach outside of our hotel for the proposal. It was decorated with rose petals in the shape of a huge heart with a beautiful couch and decorations stating ‘Will you marry me.’ We left dinner and took a walk on the beach and ‘coincidentally’ stumbled across the setup. We walked into the center of the heart and I got on one knee in the sand and proposed. Once she said yes, we set off a number of fireworks around us. It was everything I could have hoped and dreamed of.”
Mars has rolled out other initiatives, including a $2 million investment in culinary scholarships for aspiring Black chefs in partnership with the National Urban League and United Negro College Fund. Mars also is investing $2.5 million over the next five years in Greenville, Mississippi – where the brand has been produced for the U.S. for more than 40 years – “to enhance educational opportunities for area students, as well as further access to fresh foods,” the company said.
Aunt Jemima change coming soon
In February, Quaker Oats, part of PepsiCo, announced Aunt Jemima would be renamed Pearl Milling Co. with the rebranded pancake mixes, syrups, cornmeal, flour, and grits products expected to start arriving in stores in June.

Adams recalls spending much of her four-decade career at Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina, teaching in a building that did not have air conditioning. For too many teachers and students at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), she says, that is still the case.
âThatâs not unique to any one of our institutions,â Adams, a North Carolina Democrat who is founder of the HBCU Caucus in Congress, said. âItâs something that we see on many of the campuses.â
