Four BTC members of the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) switched over to United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), an ally of the BJP, on Tuesday evening. This has stripped the BPF of its status as the single largest party in the council.

Assam elections: At 80%, AIUDF had the best strike rate

Express News Service GUWAHATI: It was not the BJP, but the minority-based All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) which had the best strike rate in the Assam elections. The party contested 20 seats and won 16 with a strike rate of 80%. The seats were in Bengali-Muslim majority regions of Central and Lower Assam and the Barak Valley of Southern Assam where the party holds sway. In 2016, the AIUDF had contested 73 seats and won 13. The BJP-Asom Gana Parishad (AGP)-United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) combine had won 75 of the state’s 126 seats as against 50 by the Congress-led grand alliance of 10 Opposition parties which had the AIUDF, the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), the Left and some smaller regional parties as components.

Nadda are busy in dealing with the post-poll violence in West Bengal. The senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader said that the central leadership including Nadda, Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar and BJP s national Vice-President Baijayant Jay Panda are expected in Guwahati soon to decide the leader of the legislature party who will become the next Chief Minister.

Data analysed by Assam Election Watch (AEW) and Association for Democratic Reforms revealed 34 of the 126 candidates who won had declared criminal cases against them compared with 14 five years ago.

More Assam MLAs with criminal cases

The number of recently-elected MLAs in Assam with criminal cases and assets over one crore has risen.    As many as 34 MLAs out of 126 have declared criminal cases against them ten more than in 2016. Most of these legislators belong to the Opposition Congress (12) followed by the AIUDF (10), the ruling BJP (9), the AGP (1), the United People’s Party Liberal UPPL (1) and Independent (Raijor Dal) one, according to the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR ). Similarly, there are 28 winning candidates with declared serious criminal cases including murder, attempt to murder, crimes against women. One of them is facing murder charges, five attempt to murder and two facing cases related to crime against women.
