The Oklahoma Office of Homeland Security is pleased to announce the release of the NIMS Implementation Activities for Schools and Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) issued by the US Department of Education s Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools (OSDFS)
As Recipients of Federal Preparedness funding through the USDOE s Readiness and Emergency Management for Schools (REMS) and Emergency Management for Higher Education Discretionary Grant Program, local educational institutions and schools are required to fulfill NIMS implementation activities in close coordination with members of their local government and emergency response community. Additionally, it is recommended that all schools and HEIs review and implement these activities as they are key steps any school or HEI can take in advance of an emergency, and may also formalize many activities already being conducted b y schools or HEI
NIMS Instructor Program
Instructor Application and Renewal Process:
If you wish to become a NIMS Instructor in Oklahoma, you must complete the NIMS Instructor Application located in the NIMS Instructor Manual and submit it to the Oklahoma Office of Homeland Security. Please include all required documentation outlined in the application. Upon approval of your application, you should receive a NIMS Instructor Card with an ID number to be used in future course authorizations. Instructor certification is good for five years from the time of application or renewal. Please contact April Keeler by email or (405) 227-4701 with questions.
Following approval, NIMS Instructors must attend the first available NIMS Instructor Workshop. Workshops are half-day events that are scheduled throughout the year at various locations across the state. NIMS Adoption
Participation in National Incident Management System (NIMS) is mandatory for grant eligibility. All federal departments, state, local and tribal government agencies are required to adopt NIMS and use it in their individual domestic incident management and emergency prevention, preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation activities. Federal departments and agencies make the adoption of NIMS by state and local organizations a condition in order to participate in Federal preparedness programs. In other words, you have to be participating in NIMS to be eligible to apply for DHS grants.
The Governor of the State of Oklahoma signed an Executive Proclamation on September 28, 2005, which established NIMS as the state standard for incident management.
