A trial has been ordered for a Livingston County man charged with throwing a sandbag onto a womanâs car as she drove on I-96, seriously injuring her.
41-year-old David Vincent Garcia of Brighton was in 52-1 District Court in Novi last week for an exam on a felony charge of throwing objects at trains/cars causing serious impairment. Testimony was provided by Cindy Eckley of Livonia, who related the eye injuries she suffered when a sandbag came crashing through the windshield of her car on October 4th as she drove westbound on I-96 underneath the Old Plank Road overpass.
Charges are expected for a driver who authorities say was drunk when he crashed his vehicle into a Michigan State Police trooperâs patrol car in Pontiac on Sunday.
According to MSP, it was at approximately 1:30 a.m. when the trooper attempted to stop a driver for a traffic violation on County Center Drive and Pontiac Lake Road.
The driver stopped his car in the middle of the intersection, police said, and then started to back up and struck the patrol car. The trooper reportedly determined the driver was impaired, with a blood alcohol content measured at .13 percent. He was lodged in the Oakland County Jail.
Just nine days after being released from Michigan Department of Corrections and placed on parole, a Pontiac resident is alleged to have robbed the Genisys Credit Union in Pontiac â reportedly to pay off a debt with a drug dealer and buy more narcotics.
The Oakland County Sheriffâs Office said Joshua David Hawley, 40, got out of prison on Dec. 1, and on Dec. 10 entered the credit union at 44400 Woodward Ave. where he showed a teller a note demanding money. He was handed $1,356 and fled, the sheriffâs office said.
Detectives responding to the scene reviewed surveillance video and quickly recognized Hawley from his facial tattoos. He was arrested at an apartment in Pontiac a short time later.

A woman whose car was hit by a sandbag on Interstate 96 and the man who drove her alleged sandbagger home that night gave enough testimony Friday for a judge to send the case to trial.
Novi’s 52-1 District Judge Travis Reeds bound over the case to the higher Oakland County Circuit Court after hearing less than a half-hour of testimony.
Reeds also ordered home confinement for David Vincent-Charles Garcia, 41, of Brighton while he awaits further resolution on felony charges of throwing objects at cars causing serious impairment, assault with intent to do great bodily harm and malicious destruction of personal property.
