Elderly Woman Hangs Herself Due to Alleged Neglect by Nursing Home Staff
It’s every adult’s worst nightmare. An elderly person goes into a care facility, but they don’t make it out alive. That’s what happened to Barbara Jarvis, an 84-year-old resident at the Van Duyn nursing home in Syracuse, New York. She was found dead in her room on December 13th of last year, and authorities are finally getting to the bottom of the situation after an ongoing thorough review.
Investigating What Went Wrong
An independent investigation from the state department of health shows that Jarvis slipped and fell in her room while trying to use the bathroom. Part of her hospital gown got caught on the door handle, causing her to accidentally hang herself to death, according to the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office.

She needed assistance getting to and from the bathroom, but nursing staff did not help her.
Jarvis was found dead Dec. 13 after she fell and accidentally hanged herself when part of her hospital gown got caught on a bathroom door handle, according to the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office.
The state health department cited Van Duyn for its handling of her care.
Van Duyn’s nurse aides did not escort Jarvis even though her written care plan said she was at high risk of falling and required help, according to a state health department inspection report obtained by Syracuse.com | The Post-Standard.

Van Buren, N.Y. A man spotted in the woods with a hunting rifle caused Ray Middle School in Van Buren to briefly got into a lockout this morning, according to an alert from the school principal.
Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded at 8:29 a.m. to the area of Maple and Van Buren roads near the school, according to the Onondaga County 911 Center.
Police notified school officials that there was a man spotted in the nearby woods carrying a hunting rifle so the school went into a lock out, school principal Christina Morgan told parents in a recorded call. All the students were inside the school at the time, she said.

Shawn W. Walberger, 55, of 9494 Oswego Road, Lysander, operating a motor vehicle without ignition interlock device, issued 3 additional UTTâs, April 18, scheduled to appear, town of Scriba Court, May 3.
Philip A. Ridley, 60, of 18 County Route 51, New Haven, 10 counts of possessing a sexual performance by a child, two counts of first-degree sex abuse, and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, April 19, held to await arraignment in CAP Court.
