Matt Borges disputes major portions of House Bill 6 allegations in Ohio Elections Commission affidavit

Matt Borges, former chairman of the Ohio Republican Party, disputed major portions of the federal case against him in an affidavit filed with the Ohio Elections Commission. Borges was one of five arrested last year in connection with a $60 million bribery scheme involving FirstEnergy.

CLEVELAND, Ohio – For the first time since his arrest, Matt Borges – one of the central figures in the federal investigation into House Bill 6 – detailed his side of the story, denying key portions of the U.S. Justice Department’s case against him.

MARION – Jessica J. Greashaber, Morral, joined Ohio’s “Saved by the Belt” Club after her safety belt saved her from sustaining life-threatening injuries. The crash occurred on Irvin Shoots Road in Marion County on February 22.
Ohio State Highway Patrol Lieutenant Lance S. Shearer, Marion Post commander, presented her with a “Saved by the Belt” certificate signed by Ohio Department of Public Safety Director Thomas J. Stickrath and Colonel Richard S. Fambro, Patrol superintendent.
“Jessica is a living testimony to the effectiveness of safety belts,” Lieutenant Shearer said. “Everyone needs to buckle up every trip, every time.”
Provisional data from 2020 shows 487 people in Ohio were killed in traffic crashes where a safety belt was available, but not in use.

Airport redo: Cleveland Hopkins International Airport is planning for a $2 billion rebuilt terminal that is half new and half old. Susan Glaser reports construction won’t begin for years and financing has yet to be figured out, but the idea is to convert the airport from its one-time hub focus to concentrate on local travelers. Among its many features: larger, more light-filled ticketing, concourse and gate areas; a more centrally located customs facility; expanded security screening areas; and an on-site rental-car facility.

Governor Mike DeWine has signed into law a $465 million bill meant to help lower-income Ohioans pay for rent and mortgages.
The new law (HB 167) has widespread support and passed through the Ohio Legislature without opposition. DeWine said it will help Ohioans who are facing eviction because of the pandemic.
“The goal of this bill is to invest really in Ohio’s people, into our businesses and our communities, so our people emerge even stronger after the COVID-19 pandemic, DeWine said.
The law allows local community action agencies to work with landlords to keep people in their homes if they are unable to pay as a result of the pandemic. That money can also help with utilities. The new law also provides $100 million in coronavirus aid to the Ohio Department of Public Safety.
