Dec 15, 2020 (AP) Health care workers around the country rolled up their sleeves for the first COVID-19 shots Monday as hope that an all-out vaccination effort can defeat the coronavirus smacked up against the heartbreaking reality of 300,000 U.S. deaths. “Relieved,” proclaimed critical care nurse Sandra Lindsay after becoming one of the first to be inoculated at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New York. “I feel like healing is coming.” With a countdown of “3-2-1,” workers at Ohio State University’s Wexner Medical Center gave initial injections to applause. And in Colorado, Gov. Jared Polis personally opened a delivery door to the FedEx driver and signed for a package holding 975 precious frozen doses of vaccine made by Pfizer Inc. and its German partner BioNTech.

OhioHealth s Riverside Methodist Hospital administered its first two doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine around 8 a.m. The first two shots of the roughly 30 to 40 vaccinations were doled out on a stage of a hospital auditorium and met with a round of applause from health care workers looking on. Wednesday s shots marked the beginning of what is likely to be one of the largest vaccination campaigns in history. OhioHealth is planning to offer the vaccine to workers at each of its hospitals as more doses become available, president and CEO Stephen E. Markovich said.

Nine months into the pandemic and with the next wave overwhelming hospitals, therapist and associate professor Dr. Kenneth Yeager said health care workers are simply fatigued. “We re having both physical exhaustion, and we re having emotional exhaustion. That s the big challenge. When, emotionally, you are giving so much of yourself, that it is really difficult to find energy to keep moving forward,” he said.
