The casualty figures are three times higher in the case of men. The death rate was recorded to be the lowest in the below 30 age group during this period accounting for 3% of the deaths. Between May 5 and 9, a total of 323 Covid-related deaths were reported from across the state. Of these, the highest 102 deaths were reported from Kamrup (Metropolitan) district covering Guwahati city areas, which has been topping in the daily count of cases.

The state health department has asked all medical college hospitals and other government healthcare facilities to send patients home who are ‘now fit’ and can be treated at home. The directive has become a cause of worry as some patients feel they are safer under the care of doctors. Speaking to TOI, director of medical education, Assam, Dr Anup Kumar Barman, said the move, especially in Guwahati, was undertaken on Tuesday to resolve a possible crisis of beds. Guwahati comes under Kamrup (Metropolitan) district, which has recorded an alarming rise in new positive cases compared to other districts in rural areas.
