GUWAHATI: Though the lethal second wave of Covid-19 has not spared anyone, data shows that about 70% of the deaths related to the virus in the last five days in the state have been of the 41 to 70 years age group. The casualty figures are three times higher in the case of men.
The death rate was recorded to be the lowest in the below 30 age group during this period accounting for 3% of the deaths. Between May 5 and 9, a total of 323 Covid-related deaths were reported from across the state. Of these, the highest 102 deaths were reported from Kamrup (Metropolitan) district covering Guwahati city areas, which has been topping in the daily count of cases.

GUWAHATI: Covid-related deaths touched an alarming figure of 85 in Assam on Tuesday. A day before, the highest number of 77 deaths was reported since the pandemic outbreak last year.
The state registered 5,803 new cases, the highest so far, after 72,197 tests the previous day. For the state health authorities it was a double shock on Tuesday as the daily cases touched the highest mark of 6,258 and the death toll touched 85. The overall positivity rate also went up to 9.13%, though the number of tests came down to 68,572 on Tuesday. A total of 72,197 tests were conducted on Monday.

GUWAHATI: Hospitalization of routine cases has been restricted in government hospitals and medical colleges in Assam to keep maximum beds free for Covid patients.
The state health department has asked all medical college hospitals and other government healthcare facilities to send patients home who are ‘now fit’ and can be treated at home. The directive has become a cause of worry as some patients feel they are safer under the care of doctors.

TOI, director of medical education, Assam, Dr Anup Kumar Barman, said the move, especially in Guwahati, was undertaken on Tuesday to resolve a possible crisis of beds. Guwahati comes under Kamrup (Metropolitan) district, which has recorded an alarming rise in new positive cases compared to other districts in rural areas.
GUWAHATI: After a four-day delay, vaccination for the 18-44 age group began in Assam on Wednesday, even as the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic is turning out to be deadlier for the state. Altogether 55 Covid-related deaths were reported on Wednesday, the highest recorded in a single day since the Coronavirus outbreak last year, health officials said.
Specially abled youths (Divyangs) and journalists below 45 got their first jabs on the first day. Though the ceremonious beginning was limited to the Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) and Guwahati Press Club here, state health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the drive to vaccinate the 18+ category would be in full swing from May 7.

The firebrand peasant activist, who became the first jailed leader to win an election in Assam from judicial custody, was perhaps the first MLA to swing into activism a day after the poll results were announced. Akhil s first demand before the new government came on Monday, even before he took the oath, demanding Covid vaccination for 3.3 crore people of the state in the next three months. The peasant leader said free vaccination for all citizens should be the first and foremost task of the new government.
