County Durham women on 4x4x48 run to beat pancreatic cancer

THREE friends who set themselves the gruelling challenge of running 48 miles in 48 hours around their County Durham hometown set off on their first of 12 runs this morning. The trio will together run four miles, every four hours, for 48 hours, around the streets of Sedgefield in what will be a punishing test of their stamina, strength and endurance, both physically and mentally. Catherine Sutcliffe, Jo Bowman and Kate Stanley are running to raise awareness of pancreatic cancer, in memory of Kate’s father David Bowman who died of the so-called Silent Killer ten years ago at 67-years-old. The women’s challenge has garnered the support of their children’s two local schools, with teachers from Wynyard Church of England Primary School and Sedgefield Primary School set to join them on one of the runs.

Greenock mum s skydive in memory of much-loved grandad

A GREENOCK mum is taking a giant leap for charity in memory of her much-loved grandad. Sophie Barrett is doing a 10,000ft skydive in honour of her gramp Peter Christopher Barrett, who passed away at the age of 67 last April. Peter was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in February 2020 and tragically died after contracting pneumonia. Due to Covid restrictions at the time, Peter sadly passed away alone in hospital as no visitors were allowed in to see him. Sophie, 24, who was brought up by her grandparents from the age of 10, has been left devastated by the loss. She s now determined to pay tribute to him by raising money for Pancreatic Cancer UK.

Police officer ran 74 laps of Chinnor for Pancreatic Cancer UK

Tom Chalk, from Chinnor, started the 24-hour challenge at 8am. He is an officer in Aylesbury Vale and wore his black public order uniform weighing in at around 17kg along with helmet and shield for the entire run. Mr Chalk ran one mile laps around the village for 24 hours, completing 74 miles once the day was up. The challenge is all in aid of raising money and awareness of pancreatic cancer and specifically for #ShieldRun74 - an initiative set up by his colleague Loz East who is a police sergeant in Oxford. Mr East was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in September 2020. Despite his life being turned upside down, he has set about raising awareness of this deadly disease that kills 24 people every day and is fundraising to beat it for good.
