KOLKATA: Mamata Banerjee won the most important match of her life as Bengal’s voters reposed their faith in their “nijer meye (own daughter)” and propelled her to office for a third straight term. Her party, Trinamool Congress, comfortably went past the two-thirds mark in the 294-seat assembly, leading in 214 constituencies till late on Sunday evening and bagging an unprecedented 48% of the popular vote.
The victory, however, was rendered somewhat bittersweet by a narrow defeat for Mamata in Nandigram. The Election Commission website declared BJP candidate Suvendu Adhikari the winner by 1,956 votes around 11pm after a cliffhanger of a day.

Women MLAs have never exceeded 10% of Kerala legislative Assembly in its 64-year political history. Kerala elected the highest number of women MLAs in 1996-13. Since 2001, this percentage has hovered around 5%, but in 1967 and 1977, only one woman was elected to the Kerala Vidhan Sabha. In large part, there are only a few women MLAs because political parties give a small number of tickets to women to contest elections. Although parties in all the three coalitions have increased the percentage of tickets given to women since 2001, the number has never exceeded 16% of total contesting candidates. In the last Assembly election held in 2016, the Communist Party of India gave 16% tickets to women, followed by CPI(M), which gave 14% tickets. Both the BJP and the Congress gave 10% of their tickets to women.
The BJP has dismissed as completely baseless the allegations of corruption in the Rafale deal.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has demanded an enquiry into the Rafale fighter jet deal after a French media report claimed that Euro 1.1 million was paid to a middleman by the aircraft manufacturer. The current revelation in a French media portal that one million euros were paid to a middleman in the deal to buy 36 Rafale jets has once again raised the issue of kickbacks and other illegal payments in the Rafale deal. The report is based on an analysis of the Dassault company s accounts of 2017, CPI(M) politburo said in a statement.
