Green energy interests boosted Biden, Dems

(Mark Makela/Getty Images) Jobs, not trees, are at the center of President-elect Joe Biden’s climate plan. The $2 trillion proposal focuses on switching over to clean energy sources, a move that, Biden promises, will create millions more jobs for Americans.  It’s a promise that has piqued the interest of individuals and PACs associated with alternative energy production. Looking out for their careers as well as the environment, the growing industry more than doubled its contributions from previous election cycles and gave a record $11.1 million in 2020.  That spending comes in an election year twice as expensive as the 2016 election. President-elect Biden to nominate Rep Deb Haaland to Interior Secretary; Michael Regan as EPA Chief

Transition team officials said on Thursday that President-elect Joe Biden plans to nominate Rep. Deb Haaland as interior secretary and Michael Regan, North Carolina’s top environmental official, to head the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Haaland, who has represented New Mexico’s 1st Congressional District since 2019, was previously the chairwoman of the state’s Democratic Party and worked on President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign. She is a member of the Laguna Pueblo tribe and if confirmed, she’ll be the first Native American to serve in a Cabinet secretary position. Haaland would be responsible for overseeing the management of federal land, natural resources and national parks. The department also represents the U.S. government’s closest connection with the nation’s 1.9 million American Indians and Alaska Natives.

Joe Biden Cabinet Pick Signal Strong Support for Environmental Justice

Biden, whose team suggested last month that combatting climate change would be an “all-of-government agenda,” announced his picks to lead the Department of the Interior and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), respectively. For both positions, the president-elect chose two individuals, Rep. Deb Haaland (D-NM) and North Carolina Secretary of Environmental Quality Michael Regan, that have made a name for themselves in recent years by championing the cause of “environmental justice.” The term, which first appeared in the 1980s among environmentalists, initially was used to argue in favor of policies that more fairly distributed natural resources and provided equal protection from environmental hazards to communities “regardless of race, color, national origin, or income.” In rec
