Asheville Primary School closure gets Buncombe commissioner pushback

ASHEVILLE - Members of Buncombe County s top elected body entered a heated community debate over the closure of a primary school campus, echoing parents who say the relocation could damage early learning efforts. County commissioners asked Asheville City Schools officials pointed questions about the planned relocation of Asheville Primary School during a presentation on construction and other capital needs, an area funded largely by county government. The presentation to the Board of Commissioners happened at the same time as a city schools special called meeting where parents pushed school board members to keep the campus open. The primary school is Western North Carolina s only public Montessori school, featuring a type of education that centers on student independence. The current plan is to move it to part of Hall Fletcher Elementary.
