During the past two decades of the Unesco Heritage Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation, 14 places in Thailand have received recognition.
They can be categorised into groups of old palaces, temples, houses/commercial buildings and communities. (See sidebar).
At present, the award programme is open for submission. Categories include awards for Excellence, Distinction, Merit, New Design in Heritage Contexts, and the new Special Recognition for Sustainable Development.

A language is more than just a means of communication. It s also a way of seeing and understanding our world.
Every language on our planet comprises a unique microcosm of beliefs, practices and customs that connects its speakers to their collective past. But today, 43% of them are at risk of being spoken no more, according to data collected by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco).
Protecting them is a matter of human rights, and time is running out.
Of the world s estimated 7,100 known languages more than 2,000 of which are indigenous to Asia nine out of 10 are spoken so little they are used by fewer than 100,000 people.
China heads four of the 15 principal agencies of the UN and has its deputies in nine other agencies, Mumbai-based Gateway House: Indian Council on Global Relations said in a report. Plus, there is a network of Chinese nationals at the lower rungs of the UN system as career professionals or diplomats.
