LOS ANGELES, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) California Governor Gavin Newsom declared on Friday evening a state of emergency for Monterey and San Luis Obispo counties in California as the most recent spate of atmospheric river storms tore through the area and left chaos and destruction in their wake.
Newsom issued Friday s emergency proclamation due to storms that have threatened to cause mud and debris flows, forced the evacuation of thousands of residents and damaged critical infrastructure, including washing out a portion of Highway 1.
The highway, more often referred to as the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), is one of the most celebrated scenic drives in the United States and a frequent destination for tourists.

A blizzard has been burying parts of the West in 2 to 4 feet of snow since Tuesday afternoon.
The hardest-hit area has been the Sierra Nevada range in eastern California and western Nevada, which is under a blizzard warning until early Friday morning. Truckers will run into more whiteout conditions and potential road closures in the region Thursday.

DENVER, the United States, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) Tens of millions of Americans are waking up today to very stormy weather, from the Great Plains to the Deep South, CBS reported on Tuesday, of an avalanche of storm systems hitting the United States from coast to coast.
Record snowfalls and freezing temperatures left at least 250,000 people without power in the midwest, and one person dead and 28 injured by a deadly tornado in the southeast state of Alabama, the National Weather Service (NWS) reported.
Even sunny, hot Arizona in the southwest, was not spared Mother Nature s aberrant weather, where soft hail, called graupel, Monday fell in the arid state capital of Phoenix, that has not seen snow since 1998, according to local AZCentral news website.
