The Albany County Legislature on Monday adopted a local law designed to protect school children by imposing fines on motor vehicle owners that fail to stop for buses that are picking up or dropping off students and have a stop-arm deployed.

The local law establishes a program that involves the County Executive entering into agreements with school districts for the installation, maintenance and use of school bus photo violation monitoring systems. The passage of Local Law C for 2021 is the type of common sense and bipartisan legislation that all Albany County residents should be proud of. This law protects children and families at their bus stops and does so at no cost to the schools or the county. New York State Police and local law enforcement agencies are teaming up to make roads safer for drivers by participating in the national campaign: “U Drive. U Text. U Pay.” This campaign is designed to raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving, which according to the Governor s Traffic Safety Committee is the number one cause of motor vehicle accidents in the state.

The New York State Police will increase patrols to combat drunk, impaired and reckless driving as St. Patrick’s Day celebrations get underway starting this weekend. This special traffic enforcement detail, which is funded by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC), begins on Tuesday, March 16, 2021, and runs through Sunday, March 21, 2021.
Drivers can expect to encounter additional DWI patrols and a number of sobriety checkpoints during the enforcement period. State Police will also be ticketing districted drivers who are using handheld electronic devices, and will also conduct underage drinking and unlawful sales to minors details during the campaign.
