Gina Raimondo bid Rhode Island farewell Wednesday in what was likely her final State of the State speech, urging residents onward in the  year of rebuilding that lies ahead. As she waits for Senate confirmation as U.S. commerce secretary, Raimondo used the annual agenda-setting address to recall the high points of her six years as governor and to try to define her legacy.

BAD: Deloitte Sponsorship Just days after blasting UHIP consultant Deloitte, Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo spoke at a conference in California sponsored by Deloitte.  We paid them a lot of money, we didn’t get what we paid for, Raimondo said at the time of Deloitte s involvement in the UHIP debacle. And they represented to us that it was in much better shape than in fact it was: defective functionality, incomplete interfaces, engines that still aren’t working. Days later, Raimondo was en route to headline the Deloitte-sanctioned event.  Deloitte is not paying for any of the travel, said Raimondo spokesperson David Ortiz. She had already committed to be at the event, and was able to have a private conversation with the CEO of Deloitte Consulting, who committed to being in regular communication with the Governor.

The vote will now head to the floor for final confirmation. The committee voted 21-3 in favor of Raimondo, bringing her one step closer to officially moving to D.C. It also comes just hours before the Governor is expected to deliver what could be her final State of the State address. Governor Gina Raimondo hasn’t spoken publicly in the Ocean State in 44 days. Now that her nomination will be brought to the floor for confirmation, Wednesday could be the last time people hear from her publicly as the Governor of Rhode Island. The approval comes just over a week after the Governor defended her nomination in D.C. and testified before the committee.

ICYMI: Rhode Island was up to 115,956 confirmed coronavirus cases on Tuesday, after adding 1,409 new cases since Jan. 29. The most-recent overall daily test-positive rate was 3.7 percent, and the first-time positive rate was 20.3 percent. The state announced 19 more deaths, bringing the total to 2,173. There were 316 people in the hospital, and 74,557 residents had received the first dose of the vaccine.
