Remembering and celebrating the lives of law enforcement officers who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty is important to officers of all branches today.
A ceremony observing National Peace Officers Memorial Day was held on Friday in front of the Law Enforcement Center, 210 W. Fifth Ave, in Hutchinson.
The day of observance was designated as May 15 by President John F. Kennedy in 1962.
As part of the remembrance, Gov. Laura Kelly directed that flags be lowered to half-staff effective from sunrise to sundown throughout the state on Saturday, May 15, 2021, to honor the day.
“Kansas peace officers put their lives on the line to protect their communities,” Kelly wrote in the directive. “Their many sacrifices to keep us safe do not go unnoticed. On May 15th, and every day, we honor their service.”
