But that’s only if there are enough doses to go around.
McMahon offered a detailed look at the county’s efforts so far to distribute the coronavirus vaccine under the state guidelines. The rollout is still in its infancy, and only the most vulnerable citizens and frontline workers are eligible.
So far, the county has gotten ahold of roughly 8,400 doses of vaccine, McMahon said. The county has distributed just under 3,000 of those, as of Wednesday. The rest will be distributed in coming days.

Despite momentary disappointment among students regarding the pushback of the spring semester, Syracuse University administrators made the right call in delaying the start of residential learning. The decision allows them extra time to monitor and react to the risks of COVID-19 to the Syracuse community.
Chancellor Kent Syverud stated in an email to students on Monday that “it has become increasingly clear” that the coming weeks will most likely be some of the most difficult that central New York and the United States will experience since the pandemic began.
Mayor Walsh to Cuomo: Keeping Syracuse restaurants closed is ‘inherently unfair’
Updated Jan 06, 2021;
Syracuse, N.Y. – Moved by the “urgency and desperation’ expressed by Syracuse restaurant owners, Mayor Ben Walsh this week sent a letter to Gov. Andrew Cuomo pleading with him to lift restrictions on in-person dining in the “orange zone’ covering most of the city.
Shutting down dining in Syracuse but allowing it in suburbs has done nothing to slow the spread of Covid-19. In the six weeks since orange zone restrictions were imposed, the positive coronavirus test rate in Onondaga County has increased from 3.4% to 8.4%.

The United States Capitol was placed on lockdown Wednesday afternoon as a pro-Trump mob stormed the building. Lawmakers, who were inside counting the country’s electoral votes, were escorted to their chambers or to other buildings as people outside breached security and filled the halls of the building.
Here’s how prominent New York politicians and public officials have reacted to the insurrection:
President-Elect Joe Biden
Biden, in a speech Wednesday afternoon in Wilmington, Delaware, called on President Donald Trump to demand an end to the insurrection on national television “to fulfill his oath and defend the Constitution.” He also called on the mob to “pull back” and allow the work of democracy to proceed.

Hospitals across the state and U.S. risk exceeding capacity if the surge of COVID-19 cases being reported across the board does not slow or stop.
There’s concern locally with one hospital, as it sounds an alarm in Central New York.
“We cannot mess around right now,” Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon warned. “We need to be smart going into New Year’s. It all falls apart if we can’t take care of our sick. We can’t let things get more strained.”
