Upton Welcomes News Of Airport Grant For Kalamazoo-Battle Creek Airport

July 28, 2021 The U.S. Department of Transportation has announced a grant of $1 million for the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport to recruit, initiate, and support new air service from Kalamazoo to the Charlotte Douglas International Airport in Charlotte, North Carolina. Congressman Fred Upton says this is good news as the airport works to expand for that additional route. “We know we’re going to have larger planes that are going to need longer runways,” Upton said. “This is not only for the future of the Kalamazoo airport, but also for safety, particularly as we think about winter and ice and those things that can accumulate on runways. But there’s the space there. It’s been a long time in the planning, and this is going to speed it up a bit.”

Upton Believes Infrastructure Package Could Get House Approval In August

July 27, 2021 Congressman Fred Upton says there is hope yet for a bipartisan infrastructure package. He spoke to WSJM News Tuesday and said the talks in Washington haven’t stopped. He thinks there is way to get something substantial done “Negotiators met late into the night Monday, over the weekend, and again today, and I think we’re getting close, I really do,” Upton said. “But it’s not done yet. The proposal would be that if our Senate negotiators can come to an agreement that maybe by the end of the week they can actually vote on with 60 votes to get it through the filibuster, then the House would come back probably in mid August and take up the same package.”

Upton Calls For Continued Border Patrol Agent Funding

Congressman Fred Upton has signed on to a resolution calling on Congress to continue funding border patrol agents. He tells WSJM News the crisis at the border is getting worse every day, and so it’s not the time to relax enforcement. “Like efforts to defund the police are real troublesome, we need to protect our borders, and I signed on to a resolution that tries to ensure that, in fact, our border patrols are not cut back,” Upton said. Upton says border patrol agents need to be supported, and not defunded. He tells us the resolution sends a signal to the House leadership as spending bills are drafted in the coming weeks and border patrol isn’t included. He expects more discussions when Congress returns in full after Labor Day.
