Letters to the editor for Tuesday, June 1, 2021

Letters to the editor for Tuesday, June 1, 2021 Racism widespread in USA Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina rightfully stated that the USA is not a racist country, but his implicit implication of no widespread racism in this country is, at best, disingenuous. An armed white man kills, flees the scene, and is later arrested by police without any personal harm to the arrestee (Dylann Roof, Kyle Rittenhouse); whereas an unarmed black man with minor crime is arrested and killed on the spot (Michael Brown, Freddie Gray, Philando Castile); that is clearly black racism. Unfortunately such incidents are not rare. In 2015, the Washington Post documented 990 fatal shootings by police. Several researchers, based on a thorough statistical analysis, conclude “Blacks were more than twice as likely as whites to have been unarmed when they were shot and killed by police.”

U.S. Rep Brian Mast joined a coalition of Florida environment groups at the Port Mayaca Lock and Dam Tuesday to convey support for a revised Lake Okeechobee plan which sends more water south to the thirsty Everglades and eliminates discharges from the lake to coastal estuaries.  Now, the Palm City Republican and fellow Congressman Byron Donalds (R-Naples) are publicly calling on the Corps to adopt an improved version of one of five final Lake O plans they hope will:  Eliminate Lake O discharges to the St. Lucie River Increase dry season lake flows south to the Everglades  Eliminate discharges to the Caloosahatchee River while keeping beneficial dry season releases between a weekly average rate of 484 million and 1.4 billion gallons of water per day at the W.P Franklin Lock and Dam
