Campo Fire in Calaveras County
Sonora, CA – California’s dry conditions and temperatures already reaching into the ’90s has CAL Fire Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit (TCU) bracing for a possible catastrophic wildland fire season.
The CAL Fire chart below shows a significant increase in the number of wildfires in the state and on federal lands. The number jumped from 1,065 in 2020 to 1,788 this year, a hike of 723 fires. Even more striking is the spike in acres burned, a nearly 700% increase over last year at this time.

Escaped debris burns like the Campo Fire sparked on April 29 in Campo Seco in Calaveras County make up some of that number. It scorched 160 acres before it was contained on Tuesday, as earlier reported here. Noting that

California officials have warned that this year’s wildfire season could quickly become the worst on record.
Already fires have burned 18 square miles more than had burned by this time last year, according to new figures from Cal Fire.
Since Jan. 1, more than 20 square miles have burned in more than 1,950 fires, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. That includes fires on all lands in California, including land controlled by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
Less than 3 square miles burned in the same time span in 2020.
