BENGALURU: Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Siddaramaiah, Council Opposition leader SR Patil, Speaker Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri and Council Chairman Basavaraj Horatti, showed each other the mirror at an event to discuss the decline in parliamentary values.
Senators get more time to talk

THE Senate on Tuesday agreed that average senator s speech will now be 30 minutes, up from the 20-minute limit set last August to curb the covid19 pandemic, but not a full return to the pre-pandemic allocation of 40 minutes.
Moments before Opposition Senator Wade Mark could move a private motion to return to pre-pandemic allocations, Senate Leader Franklin Khan made proposals to which a split Senate agreed.
Khan proposed 45 minutes for a motion s mover, 40 minutes for the first responder and 30 minutes for all other speakers and the wrap-up.
Senate President Christine Kangaloo told Mark he now had 45 minutes.

BENGALURU: Karnataka chief minister B S Yediyurappa on Wednesday said democracy can be successful only if public welfare is the primary goal of every elected representative, as he called on them to introspect. Both the ruling party and opposition have to work with caution so that no untoward incidents happen in the legislative assembly and the council, but as public representatives we have to question ourselves whether we are following it, we have to introspect, Yediyurappa said. Our conduct should be such that it shows the path for the future generations, if we are always conscious about this, mistakes won t happen, he said adding successful implementation of democracy is possible with good traditions and practices.

Politicians, including Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa and Leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah, along with representatives from a cross section of society on Wednesday deliberated on the declining values in the parliamentary system and possible measures to stem the decline.
The programme, ‘An introspection preventing the decline of parliamentary values’, was organised by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, Karnataka, in the light of several unsavoury incidents in both Houses of the legislature, and also outside the House, in recent times.
