The nation s youngest National Youth Poet Laureate and arguably most popular young poet, 22-year-old poet Amanda Gorman, was asked to recite some original words at the big game.  NPR reports her new poem will honor three Americans  Los Angeles educator Trimaine Davis, Florida nurse manager Suzie Dorner and Pittsburgh-based James Martin, a Marine veteran who volunteers with the Wounded Warrior Project for their work during the coronavirus pandemic. The three have also been named honorary captains for the Super Bowl by the NFL.

Posted By: JJ Hayes February 4, 2021 @ 3:55 am Blogs, JJ Hayes Show Page     Today’s Star Spangled Salute honors Marine Veteran James Martin.  James joined the Marines in 2000, served in Iraq and Afghanistan and in 2015 qualified for medical retirement after being injured and paralyzed from the waist down.  This father to 8 worked with the Wounded Warrior Project during the pandemic to help other Veterans stay in touch during a time when so many of us were apart. It’s these efforts that landed James the role as one of the honorary captains who will take the field on Sunday in Tampa to take art in the coin flip. On being chosen, James says, “I’m absolutely astonished, humbled and surprised”.   Congratulations on your well deserved honor and THANK YOU for your service.

Marine veteran selected as Super Bowl LV honorary captain

Los Angeles educator Trimaine Davis, one of those selected by the NFL, reacts to the announcement and discusses how he has supported his students during the pandemic. The NFL has selected James Martin, a Marine Corps veteran who served in Afghanistan and Iraq, as one of three honorary captains to take part in Sunday s coin toss during Super Bowl LV. Every year, the NFL chooses honorary captains who have helped make a difference in their communities to participate in the coin toss, which determines the team that gets the ball first. I m absolutely astonished, humbled and surprised, Martin, who lives in Pittsburgh, told Fox News of the NFL s decision.
