Cucci’s restaurant founder, Victor Cucci, passes away at 68 Published:  Updated:  Tags:  COVINGTON, Va. – Victor Cucci, the founder of Cucci’s Pizzeria, passed away Friday night at age 68. This comes after the Cucci family had to close the Covington pizzeria for about a week after Cucci was sent to the Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital with the coronavirus. His restaurant has been a staple in our region since it opened in 1977, and when the restaurant closed briefly this week Cucci and his family received ample support from community members. 1931-2021 Helen L. Simpson (Cheverton) passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 29, 2021, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Born on May 18, 1931, in Jacksboro, Texas, Helen was the daughter of the late John P. Simpson and E. Grace Sidebottom Simpson. She is preceded in death by her seven siblings and the father of her children, Rev. David P. Cheverton. Helen was a woman who was small in stature but mighty in strength. She overcame many obstacles in her life, the most notable being the time she was run over by a car but lived to tell about it. However, she wouldn’t have told you about it, because she was quiet in her strength and wasn’t one to brag.

A Roanoke nurse says that’s what happened to her when potential employers found out she was in a wheelchair. For two years, the job hunt for Ryann Kress was difficult. “I was just so tired of hearing no’s,” Kress said. Despite having 15 years in emergency medicine and the nation facing an ongoing nursing shortage, Kress was surprised she was now struggling to find a job.
