Health officials warn of younger hospital admissions for COVID-19

Hospital admissions for COVID-19 have been ticking upward this week in the Roanoke Valley and in Virginia, as more younger people fill the beds that were once taken by older folks. Dr. Paul Skolnik, chair of medicine at Carilion Clinic, said admissions for people 61 and older went down in March, but rose for those 60 and younger. He cautioned that one month does not make a trend, but said COVID-19 admissions at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital are similar to what is being seen elsewhere, since vaccination efforts sought first to protect the elderly who were most at risk of severe illness from the coronavirus. Younger people who are thought not to be at risk for serious illness are now becoming eligible for vaccination.

CASEY: Hospital staff misplaced her mom, then found her 30 minutes later

You might be able to understand the fear that struck Tammie Stanley s heart last week when you hear the story she told me. Tammie was on the job as a guidance counselor at a Roanoke middle school March 23 when she got an unexpected phone call from LewisGale Medical Center. That s when she first learned her 84-year-old mom, Sherry Stanley, was at the emergency room. Turned out, Sherry had taken a fall in the driveway of the Cave Spring home the two women share. Sherry was OK, a woman named Ashley from the Emergency Department told Tammie. The hospital treated an ugly contusion on Sherry s forehead, and she was ready for discharge.
