Fletcher Building gets $5m too much in carbon subsidy

Marc Daalder of Newsroom.co.nz11:57, Jul 29 2021 Lynn Grieveson/NEWSROOM Fletcher Building received 144,000 carbon credits more than it was meant to be allocated. The Government has over-allocated carbon credits worth a minimum of $5 million to Fletcher Building over the past three years, Marc Daalder reports. A 2020 report into the Government s free allocation of carbon credits to trade-exposed industrial emitters found that Fletcher Building s cement operation was among the companies benefitting from an over-allocation of units as a result of outdated data. While many of the specifics in the report have been redacted over commercial confidentiality concerns, a Newsroom analysis of the figures indicate Fletcher Building has received at least 144,000 carbon credits above what it was intended to get for its cement production between the 2016/17 and 2018/19 financial years.

Frustrated farmers giving up on costly native bush restoration

Members of the Banks Peninsula Native Forest/Climate Change group this month met with Climate Change Minister James Shaw to outline the difficulties they face. Projects that followed in Hinewai’s footsteps allowed native bush to grow back on its own without any planting, using gorse as a nurse plant. But members told Shaw many were struggling to meet ETS guidelines. ALDEN WILLIAMS/Stuff Rod Donald Banks Peninsula Trust manager Suky Thompson makes her way down the Te Ahu Pātiki block. The trust needed money from carbon credits to help pay for ongoing fencing and pest control but in an assessment previous landowners had done, just 62 of its 500ha would qualify, manager Suky Thompson said.
